As we approach the 50th anniversary of the founding of Michael Oak which we will celebrate in 2012 we look back with deep gratitude on the pioneers who had the courage to take up the parents' call for a new school.
Michael Oak started out in the dining room of one of the parents who lived just minutes away in Rosmead Avenue. So begins the story of a school that owes its strength to the loyal support of parents and friends who, as in the original gesture, have given generously and way beyond all normal expectations. Complementing this wonderful parent support was the utter dedication of the founding teachers and those teachers that gathered around Mr Schotte and Mrs Gabler, two pioneers who sacrificed so much for the young school. This ethos of dedicated teaching established by our pioneer teachers stands firmly with the utter commitment and generosity of the parents. These founding deeds nourish us still and have helped give Michael Oak its special qualities.
The Old House was bought by parents on an auction and provided the first classrooms for the fledgling school of 15 pupils. School assemblies were held in the present reception foyer. Soon bricks were being laid by parents and the first classrooms completed with their hard work. More classrooms were followed by a school hall, then the neighbour's house was bought for our kindergarten. The rest has been a story of continuing growth and development, a school where teachers really love to teach. From the outset a vibrant community effort, dedicated to Waldorf education.
